We must thank the folks at Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Galway, for their efforts for the Colette Wittorski reading there on February 18th, and the Clare Three-Leggéd Stool Poets for their terrific work in organising her reading from ‘Northern Lights’ at Glór, Ennis, on February 20th. Brian Mooney and other poets also read and the group will read again on March 27th at ‘The Forge at Gort’ festival, and Yuki will play before her return to Japan. Books were sold there, music was played; our thanks to Yuki, Michel and Andrew, who very kindly played for us. My personal thanks to Kernan Andrews at The Galway Advertiser for running a very nice piece on Colette Wittorski, who was visiting Ireland and Galway for the very first time. Here are three links to the events, poetry and music:

VIOLINIST YUKI NISHIOKA FOR ‘THE FORGE AT GORT’ FESTIVAL

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Violinist Yuki Nishioka will accompany the Clare Three-Leggéd Stool writers’ group in a reading as part of the third The Forge at Gort festival, organised by The Western Writers’ Centre - Ionad Scríbhneoirí Chaitlín Maude - Galway in O’Grady’s Restaurant and Bar, Gort, Co. Galway at 4.30pm, Saturday, March 27th. Admission is free.
Yuki Nishioka has been playing classical violin since she was three and has competed at a national level in Japan; she was jointly awarded the Haydn prize for ensemble work with Mùm String Quartet.(1st violin) After graduating from Aichi Provincial University of Fine Arts and Music she became a member of Aichi Chamber Orchestra and played for a number of years as their lead violinist; she has also worked as an extra for a wide variety of musical groups and orchestras, from classical and opera to ballet and musical. In 2008 she encountered Traditional Irish Music in Galway. She is currently living in Ennis, learning the music which, she feels, changed her life. She feels that life is much more exciting learning from the rich musical tradition in Co. Clare. She teaches music at Coole Music in Gort. Last June she performed a recital at Holistic Meadow in Gort. The Western Writers’ Centre thanks The Arts Council for their support. Our thanks also to our Friends of the Centre, Pat O’Callaghan, and poet Knute Skinner. The Festival is still seeking sponsors. Details at 087.2178138. westernwriters@eircom.net (Niamh.)
